Accessible Bathroom Renovation Planning

Accessibility improvements work best when they are integrated into the layout, structure and fixture choices from the beginning rather than added after finishes are complete.

Design for the actual user

Needs differ. Some users benefit from a step-free shower, others from a tub transfer arrangement, more turning space, lever controls, improved lighting or reachable storage. Avoid assuming one “accessible bathroom” template suits everyone.

Add support while walls are open

If walls are being opened, consider appropriate structural backing for current or future grab bars and accessories. Record its location before the wall is closed. The placement and design of accessibility features should follow applicable standards and the user’s needs.

Reduce trip and slip risks

Thresholds, floor transitions, loose rugs, glare and slippery wet surfaces can all affect safety. Product slip ratings, drainage and cleaning should be considered together.

Check local requirements

Accessibility codes and standards vary depending on country, province/state, municipality, building type and whether the space is private residential or public/commercial. For a regulated project, use the applicable local requirements rather than a generic online dimension.
