Define the wet area
Showers, tub surrounds and other regularly wetted areas need assemblies suited to their exposure. The exact required extent and permitted materials depend on the building code, installation standard and manufacturer system being used.
Keep systems compatible
Membranes, backer boards, drains, sealants, mortars and tapes are often tested as systems. Mixing products without confirming compatibility can create warranty and performance problems.
Details are where failures happen
Corners, curbs, niches, benches, penetrations, drain connections and transitions deserve deliberate detailing. Many failures start at interfaces rather than in the middle of a flat wall.
Flood testing and inspection
Where applicable, testing before tile is installed can reveal problems while corrections are still relatively straightforward. Follow the waterproofing manufacturer’s instructions and local inspection requirements.
