Before design is finalized
- List the current bathroom’s problems and must-have improvements.
- Measure room dimensions, openings and fixture locations.
- Confirm who needs to use the room and any accessibility goals.
- Decide whether the project is cosmetic, mid-level or a full rebuild.
- Set a budget using local prices and keep a contingency reserve.
Before demolition
- Check local permit, inspection and trade requirements.
- Finalize the main layout and fixture models.
- Collect manufacturer specification sheets.
- Confirm shower/tub system, drain, valves and waterproofing approach.
- Confirm vanity, sink, mirror/medicine cabinet and storage.
- Plan lighting, receptacles, fan controls and any heated floor.
- Confirm product availability and lead times.
- For older buildings, address any required hazardous-material assessment before disturbance.
During construction
- Photograph walls before they are closed, including blocking, plumbing and wiring locations.
- Document approved change orders.
- Follow required inspection sequence.
- Check waterproofing details before they are concealed by finishes.
- Dry-layout critical tile areas where appearance matters.
Closeout
- Test fixtures, drains, lights, controls and ventilation.
- Complete a written punch list.
- Keep warranties, manuals, paint codes, tile information and model numbers.
- Save spare tile and matching finish materials where practical.
- Record shutoff and access locations for future maintenance.
