Bathroom Renovations

Bathroom Materials & Finishes: Choose for a Wet Environment

A durable bathroom combines suitable materials, good detailing and realistic maintenance. The most expensive finish is not automatically the most appropriate.

Match the material to exposure

A material that works on a dry powder-room wall may not be appropriate inside a shower. Ask where the product is approved to be used, how it must be installed, what substrate it requires and whether sealing or maintenance is needed.

Balance texture and cleaning

Highly textured surfaces can improve grip or add visual interest, but they may hold soap residue or dust. Deep grout joints and intricate profiles require more cleaning. Consider the household’s willingness to maintain the surface.

Use samples in the room

Light changes colour dramatically. View tile, paint, countertop and cabinet samples together under the actual bathroom lighting if possible. Compare them both wet and dry where relevant.

Plan transitions

Edges, outside corners, changes of material and floor-height transitions are part of the design. Decide whether they use factory trim pieces, profiles, mitres or another approved detail before installation begins.
