Bathroom Renovations

Showers and Tubs: Planning the Wet Zone

The bathing area drives waterproofing, drainage, valve placement, glass, storage niches and many of the most expensive details in a bathroom renovation.

Select the system before rough-in

Curbless showers, prefabricated bases, site-built pans, tubs and tub-shower combinations all impose different requirements. Decide the basic assembly early so the drain, framing, subfloor and waterproofing can be coordinated.

Control water, not just splashes

Think about spray direction, hand showers, door openings, curb details, transitions and where wet towels will go. A large shower with poor glass and fixture placement can create more cleanup than a smaller well-planned one.

Niches and benches are construction details

Recesses and benches interrupt the waterproofing plane and need compatible detailing. Confirm dimensions with the tile layout so small cuts and awkward grout lines are avoided.

Tub decisions

For tubs, consider entry height, cleaning access, faucet reach, overflow location and service access for components that require it. Freestanding tubs can look simple but often need careful planning for floor-mounted fillers and cleaning clearance.
